Different people take the facts - declining grain production, natural resources, basically our ecosystem collapsing slowly but steadily - differently. Also, personality types seem to correlate with how informed people are about these problems. Introverts are more likely to read up on, think and worry about pressing overpopulation issues. Extroverts with good social skills learned to look the other way. This professor lived 6 years by himself in the desert. Just by his profile I am not surprised about his preaching. I agree he should be interviewed on National TV. Not necessarily to be ridiculed, but to keep these issues in the forefront of our attention. Someone mentioned Hitler earlier. Hitler can be looked at as an isolated individual, a fluke, "the devil" - surely he was evil, but the situation allowed him to perpetrate a war that took the life of millions. I am afraid if it was not him, it would have been someone else. Recently I looked at a paper about an interesting experiment. Some psychiatrist advertised an executioner job and compiled a report from the cover letters of applicants why they felt they were the ideal candidate for the job. We are still the old species who roamed the savannas, same drives, same instincts. Borderline, fragile personalities sometimes holding high risk jobs with security clearance live amongst us. We can not avoid all of them. That's why in my view we have to avoid the situation, not Dr. Doom. Naturally mutating virus, natural catastrophes, war, or crazy individuals. We have to take one of the bitter pills, unless we come up with a solution that limits our proliferation in a less drastic, more controlled manner. We are among the few nations who designed bugs with improved virulence, destructive power, shelf life and easy dissemination for military purposes. We designed sword and shield type weapon systems so we can inoculate our population and attack others. I’ve read a bit of rhetoric from crazy environmentalist (and Peta) calling for the death of humans to cleanse the Earth.

Its ironic to me that some extremists claim to want to protect life yet they want to make humanity extinct.

It seems that one of the tenets of fanactics is contradictions (i.e. holy wars, speak of war for peace, genocide for God, murder for pro-life, extintion for mother Earth, nukes for peace, giving up liberties for freedom).

Justifying any evil to satisfy our own selfish interests (whether for individual, nation or special interest group) is just a part of human nature. I hope we will survive the contradictions in our nature. Looking at our history, it is amazing we have made it this far.
