Absolutely one of the best things I have read online in weeks. From Microsoft's perspective they are "fixing" a big problem by creating an even bigger one. It's surprising really. The piracy issue is one of lost revenue. I don't see the wisdom in replacing it with a problem of lost share. Great analysis Zoli.

Zoho releases product updates more or less weekly, and I don't normally write them - frankly, I can't keep track. (I do know, however, that Zoho Sheet that was just a cute but limited editor when I first looked at it is by now way beyond my average&nbs...

So....Microsoft is arguing that OpenOffice is bad because it requires installation, etc.....i.e. just like Microsoft Office is right now? I'm not sure I followed that but they seem a little confused and/or confusing.

You're right, many people use MS Office out of fear and laziness. But those only go so far, and when it comes up against money and figuring out new rules, a lot of people will go with OpenOffice, google spreadsheets perhaps, etc.

Especially schools and governments who often have very limited software budgets and, perhaps even more importantly, old hardware.

Good analysis. I'd also say that your analysis applies to international markets where piracy rate may be higher as well. The truth is despite whining about the piracy and how they loose billions (they don't as explained in the post), pirated copies allow seeding of the marketplace with MS products, creating the critical mass, making it impossible for competitive offerings to have a chance.

It'll be great news for OpenOffice, Corel and the web based office options out there, if MS does something like a kill switch to prevent the masses from using MS Office.
