[...] So yes, Atlassian is seeding their market with thousands of free customers this week. Which is fine, I’ve said before: you don’t have to be purely altruistic to do good. [...]

Mike (Cannon-Brookes) and I met with Salesforce's Foundation director Suzanne DiBianca and got amazingly useful advice on our foundation at Atlassian. Salesforce does a first class job and may be best in class in this area. Tying it to employee involvement and making that commitment of employee time off was central to what we learned from Salesforce. Frankly we still have a lot to do in terms of real implementation but I think our guiding principles are starting out right. Thanks Zoli, but give Salesforce a lot of credit. Also watch for a large Kiva benefit in SF.

I see a growing number young business people taking many of the ideas behind social and green entrepreneurship and building these into the way they do business. Even Jason Calacanis is looking to give something back! You could call it karmapreneurship.

Capitalism is less red in tooth and claw than it once was. In the 21st century there's argument for saying that business is a more powerful force for good than politics.

It's a very hard question. I believe that companies can "do good" while also doing well, and that allocating pre-IPO stock and employee time can be smart business, especially in terms of employee morale.

Part of salesforce.com's foundation program is that 1% of the time of employees is devoted to volunteering:

<a href="http://www.salesforcefoundation.org/time" rel="nofollow">http://www.salesforcefoundation.org/time</a>

The pen is used as well (as well as the free service to non-profits).
