[...] Zoli Erdos comments on my remarks at ZDNet about Apple’s evil updater, which tries to push Safari on Windows users who previously installed iTunes or QuickTime. Here’s how he starts off: I’ve been observing an annoying trend on TechMeme for a while now: when a good discussion happens over the weekend, obviously some writers will miss it - then they sleep on it, come back to it a few days later and TechMeme picks it up as a new theme.
Joh,

I think you misunderstood Zoli's point. It was Ed Bott who said Apple were wrong - just look at Windows Update as the shining example of how to do things right.

Zoli and I, when we finally stopped laughing at such a ridiculous assertion, both pointed out that Microsoft are just as culpable as Apple in their update practices.

Both are wrong to use opt-in and Ed makes himself look silly by trying to grab the moral highground on this one.

MS was wrong with the Live installer
That doesn't make it not wrong for Apple to offer Safari in an "update" that takes advantage of Windows Update
