From the perspective of an online retailer SaaS makes much more sense. It is much more cost effective to rent a SaaS such as MTI’s Brick N Click for eBay which provides 3 easily manageable eBay based sales channels that make a retailers life easier and eliminates a lot of the preliminary and maintenance work. You should read this webpage that explains the revolutionary technology (http://www.mtiretail.com/SaaS_Info.cfm) and if you would like more details you can take their webinar. http://www.mtiretail.com/BrickNClick.cfm?PgID=1

At EchoSign at least Enterprise is NOT a follow-on to self-serve. They have different ways of looking at software, and don't care as much that there is a "free trial" or a limited use account except in a very narrow sense of those who want to try the product in isolation. The majority want to be demo'd the product (unlike self-service), whether in an automated fashion (on the site), in a passive fashion (on a webinar), or 1-1 with a sales rep.

Hence the massive # of sales reps at Salesforce, WebEx, etc. ...

Re: pull. This may be more true actually in Enterprise than SMB b/c they actually have folks looking for 2.0 solutions. SMBs aren't searching for new services as much as enterprises today, I think, counter to conventional wisdom and the TechCrunch-centric view of the world. SMBs will buy, but it's the larger businesses and enterprises that have the people and bandwidth to look ...
