Reading TechCrunch’s profile on Wyaworks, a new startup that “aims to do for web development what blogging has done for publishing” reminded me of another product I placed in my Web 2.0 Bookmarks a while ago and forgot to check it out: Vyew. (no relation to wyaworks other than being remote namesakes).
It’s interesting how some brands become verbs: back in my last “corporate” job even after we switched from WebEx to GotoMeeting, we kept on saying “we’ll webex it”. But Vyew is a cute name, I wonder if the same will happen as users switch. Because they will switch. Nothing beats free.
Of course Vyew has more going for it than just being free. Nice features, easy-to-use UI (I’ve just tested it with Dennis) , and it’s even PC, being green. A key value for people on-the-go is that it doesn’t require any download, you just start collaborating from any browser.
Vyew is a product of the team that created Simulat – I am not sure if it is the same company or another venture of the same individuals. They launched 2 weeks ago.

Though I will certainly agree that the name is cute, I think it a bad choice as spelling is too strange for a common word. Those that hear it spoken are highly unlikely to know how to spell it.
Even in your blog article, you spelled it too different ways. 🙂
Having said that, I think the product concept is excellent. I’m surprised someone hasn’t done this sooner as all of the web conferencing services cost too much.
Oops, thanks for catching my typo, just fixed it.
As for the name, I forgot the cardinal rule: it should be Vyewr 🙂
It’s already doing the rounds among my readers Zoli – nice one.
Are All Good Product Names Really Taken?
Previously I wrote about How a Good Name Turns out to be Crap – Literally – well, whatever the meaning, it did not hurt Jobby. Guy Kawasaki was lamenting on the difficulty of finding a good name/domain (Oops, are you sure you want all that commen…
Gold Medal for Listening to Customers
And the Gold goes to: Vyew.
I landed on this, very cool and interesting project for desktop sharing. WebEx seems over rated looking at some thing free and open.
Just quoting from the site directly.
What is ShowMyPC?
This is an open source Remote PC access project, an alternative to subscription
based sites like WebEx or Gotomypc.
ShowMyPC uses SSH port forwarding mechanism using Open Source SSH client plink
and VNC Remote access software. Users can use there own middle SSH server.
No registration, no logins, all open and free. Read More.
I really liked the whiteboard feature because it makes for an interactive powerpoint of some sorts for webinars and online meetings. I can also use it in conjunction with my remote access software in order to have access to my work files while working with home, and host web meetings with clients from any computer.
Talking about WebEx killer and vyew? Check this and try Netviewer.
RHUB remote access is also a good one. You don’t need to download anything. You get instant remote PC control, and speed is very impressive. You can also remote reboot your PC, or remote lock it. I’m especially fond of its recording feature, which can be used to record screen and voice. It’s not free though.
