Why is Hummer Winblad the #1 search term on Technorati most of Saturday? 
I can’t find anything significant. Anyone? Will? Oh, well, Technorati’s gone crazy in the baking 110 heat…
Update (7/22): I can attest that indeed there is a lot of search activity on Hummer Winbladt: this very post is getting a lot of hits, from none other than Technorati….
As one of the many aimless viewers incoming from Technorati, I am wondering the same thing myself.
Could this be a new form of online advertising?
For example:
1. Company x searches their name a couple million times via a random zombie network or a field of proxies–whatever.
2. Company x now has a large amount of curious bloggers wondering who they are, the equivilent to an extremely significant amount of brand impressions, and thus a highly elevated level of brand awareness.
If this isn’t the case now, I’m pretty sure it will be (or, already is) the case with other companies. This is much too obvious of a technique, and the “beauty” of it lies in the fact it isn’t directly invasive to the audience being targeted, as they don’t really even know they are being exploited.
I guess it could work – and now that it’s published it won’t be long before someone does it (?).
But it’s certainly not the case here: Hummer Winblad is a well known VC firm, they don’t need this kind of inflated publicity.
