Dr Doom Plans to Save Earth by Wiping Out 90% of Humans

I am so shocked, I don’t find the right words.  I’d like to hope it’s a hoax… one scientist can go mad, but the entire Texas Academy of Science giving a standing ovation to this nutcase would-be mass murderer?    WTF?

Dr. Eric R. Pianka , a University of Texas evolutionary ecologist advocated for the extermination of 90 percent of the human species in a most horrible and painful manner, by releasing the Ebola virus – all in the name of “saving the Planet”.  Not only he received a standing ovation, but the Texas Academy of Science  honored him with its 2006 Distinguished Texas Scientist Scientist award.

Here are the chilling details by The Citizen Scientist –  and retort by Dr. Shawn Carlson, Ph.D.

Update (4/2):  My prediction: this story will reverberate through Blogland, then in 2-3 days mainstream media will pick it up.  Nationwide uproar follows, the University of Texas will be forced to act, and Dr Pianka will not be teaching there for long.

Update (4/3):  The media is starting to pick up the story.  Jeff  (see comment below) just pointed to a Drudge story, and I’ve found some more today – hopefully, the list will grow. World Net Daily is running a poll – they likely lose a lot of voters, since they require registration, however, viewing is unrestricted, and here are the current results.

Update (4/5):  Just as I predicted, the story is all over the media, including ABC NewsFox News, NBCCNN ..etc.  Professor Death was forced to come forward and explain his views…

not a April fools’ joke? wow

That was my initial thought, but this was

    – too harsh and tasteless

    – the dates don’t match, 1st article 2 days before, 2nd one day after

    – it’s a science paper…

    Mind boggling …

Wipe out around 90% of the current population, huh?

That’s just the first step in the plan.

Mims is not a credible source. He’s a creationist, disgruntled with the scientific establishment and it’s no surprise to watch him jump onto the first occasion to misrepresent those “evilutionists”. It’s no surprise either to watch all those wingnuts climb on board and accuse all leftists and environmentalists of mass murder wishes.

Read here for a different account.

Mind you, I’m not saying tht Pianka is not a borderline case, but that the account of people cheering and tributing a standing ovation to a would-be mass murderer is probably not very credible.

Oh, by the way, some of those wingnuts shouldn’t oppose Pianka’s views too much. After all, their beloved god is not going to do much better once the rapture comes. Who says the Ebola virus is not going to be god’s preferred way to wipe off most of humanity from Earth and save the remaining 10%? 😉

    Ugo,

Thanks for commenting. Personally, I don’t support creationism, and I think that “Intelligent Design” that’s gaining strength in the US is nothing but religion+politics re-packaged as pseudo-science.

I’m not familiar with Mims’s background, but let me point out that he is not the only ource, there was a follow-up article by Shawn Carlson, Ph.D. who clearly states: “while he stopped short of calling for terrorist action to bring this result about, he clearly implied that this was a right and proper future for our species and our planet.”

Why do we have so few sources reporting on this? Perhaps the fact that Pianka had the cameras switched off has to do with it? I don’t know, but I certainly hope that all the buzz in the blogosphere will bring it to the mainstraim media, and Pianka will be interviewed publicly.

    Zoli,

I wasn’t certainly implying that you somehow espouse the views of some of the people you linked to.

Anyway, I must admit I too have many reservations concerning Prof. Pianka’s “theories”. But most of all I resent the usual anti-science, right-wing crowd, of which Dembski et.al are typical exaples, pointing to them as if they were exemplary of the kind of depravation that being a secular, agnostic thinker inevitably leads to.

    Cheers,

    Ugo

This has got to be an April Fools joke…

I’ve read a bit of rhetoric from crazy environmentalist (and Peta) calling for the death of humans to cleanse the Earth.

Its ironic to me that some extremists claim to want to protect life yet they want to make humanity extinct.

It seems that one of the tenets of fanactics is contradictions (i.e. holy wars, speak of war for peace, genocide for God, murder for pro-life, extintion for mother Earth, nukes for peace, giving up liberties for freedom).

Justifying any evil to satisfy our own selfish interests (whether for individual, nation or special interest group) is just a part of human nature. I hope we will survive the contradictions in our nature. Looking at our history, it is amazing we have made it this far.

That’s just wrong. I really want to know if there was some subliminal meaning there. (Apart from the obvious April 1st joke)

Your prediction is closer to ringing true… the story is on Drudge today.

There are volumes about the environmental problems we are struggling with, Jared Diamond books, or Powerdown by Richard Heinenberg just to name a few. Different people take the facts – declining grain production, natural resources, basically our ecosystem collapsing slowly but steadily – differently. Also, personality types seem to correlate with how informed people are about these problems. Introverts are more likely to read up on, think and worry about pressing overpopulation issues. Extroverts with good social skills learned to look the other way.

This professor lived 6 years by himself in the desert. Just by his profile I am not surprised about his preaching.

I agree he should be interviewed on National TV. Not necessarily to be ridiculed, but to keep these issues in the forefront of our attention.

Someone mentioned Hitler earlier. Hitler can be looked at as an isolated individual, a fluke, “the devil” – surely he was evil, but the situation allowed him to perpetrate a war that took the life of millions. I am afraid if it was not him, it would have been someone else. Recently I looked at a paper about an interesting experiment. Some psychiatrist advertised an executioner job and compiled a report from the cover letters of applicants why they felt they were the ideal candidate for the job. We are still the old species who roamed the savannas, same drives, same instincts. Borderline, fragile personalities sometimes holding high risk jobs with security clearance live amongst us. We can not avoid all of them. That’s why in my view we have to avoid the situation, not Dr. Doom.

Naturally mutating virus, natural catastrophes, war, or crazy individuals. We have to take one of the bitter pills, unless we come up with a solution that limits our proliferation in a less drastic, more controlled manner.

By the way, this whole conversation is a bit hypocritical. We are among the few nations who designed bugs with improved virulence, destructive power, shelf life and easy dissemination for military purposes. We designed sword and shield type weapon systems so we can inoculate our population and attack others. Dr Doom may be fantasizing, but we elected and actively financed a system with our tax dollars, which acted upon this fantasy. Just in case. Hi Zoli,

For background information on the ideological background of Eric Pianka, go my site (http://www.biofractalevoluton.com), open Articles (under Writings) and then open “The Malthusian Wolf in Darwinian Clothing.” Sad to say, Pianka’s view are very much in line with orthodox Darwinism.

Feel free to provide a link to my article for viewers who want to know more.

Thanks for picking up on this important story.

it’s difficult to comment about this because it is very strange for me to talk about wiping out 90% of all humans. i hate it when you are trying to label the person in cause (i’ve see this happen lots of times) instead of seeing what’s really going on – why did he come up with this “solution” – is it a viable solution etc.

  16. Humans are the problem on this planet including me, if there is an afterlife i will be happy when almost all people are wiped out and the planet reverts back to how it was with its isolated ecosystems, but when the sun loses energy and expands and the inhabital zone moves, the earth will cook and all life will die on this planet, might as well let the little life have a chance until that happens.
