Online Backup and Desktop Search

Friends Don’t Let Friends Lose Data says Chris, and I agree, so I followed his recommendation and signed up for the Mozy online backup service – now I can sleep at night.  Previously I used FolderShare to sync data between my multiple PC’s, but now I am left with one laptop, so the free 2G storage and automated backup is now a real(data) life-saver.

However, I noticed it makes  full backup every day, instead of doing it incrementally, as it’s supposed to, after the initial backup.  Other users don’t seem to have this problem, which makes me look for the culprit elsewhere.  I could not imagine (digital) life without Desktop Search anymore, and I tend to believe Copernic is by far better than any of the GoogleYahooMicrosoft products.

I wonder if Copernic Desktop Search causes files look “changed” during the reindex process – that would explain while they get backed up again.  I am an early beta tester of their 2.0 release, so end up reindexing quite often.

This post is also an experiment in effectively using the “edge” – sure, I could go to Mozy’s site, register, describe the problem there, then go to Copernic and do the same, and probably play messenger-boy for a few rounds between the two companies – let’s see if they pick this up and find a resolution.

In the meantime I am patiently impatiently waiting for Box.net to add their long-awaited synchronization feature.

I feel IBackup is a good online storage and backup service compared to most of the free services.

I never thought of online backup and storage two years back. But last year my PC’s hard disk crashed, leaving me with no option but to take a decision to backup my data online. I have been using IBackup for Windows to backup and restore all my critical files and folders. So far my data has been totally secure and safe with IBackup.

IBackup supports one-way syncing of files or folders from your computer to your IBackup account and all data transfer is totally secure with a high level of 128-bit SSL encryption. One really good feature is

snapshots which allows the account holder to see the files stored in the IBackup account during the previous days.

IBackup for Quicken performs near real time backup of your recently modified ‘Quicken/ QuickBooks’ files to your IBackup account.

I will stick with Data Deposit Box for my online backup. It just works better…

  3. For online backup, try http://www.myotherdrive.com and see what you think. They offer 5GB of storage free. They currently have batch upload/download (single directory level), but I read that they will soon be offering a ‘synchronize’ feature that will automate the process. They also have inexpensive buy-up plans for more space, all the way to 200GB. I have to admit, their web-based UI is one of the slickest I have every seen!

  4. Thanks, this may become interesting when they have sync, until then it requires manual work, not interesting to me.

Also, it would not hurt to list some company background info, if you (they?) expect users to trust you (them?) with their data.

Some non commercial options only allow limited bytes restore in any one month resulting in a hotel California for your data. I use a commercial version of http://www.backupanytime.com which allows unlimited restore in any one period or session. Anything less and you really are setting yourself up to depend on something you cant depend on!

I used Mozy.com for a while but fount it used some serious resource. May be better on a new core duo but on my celeron it was vslow andworse still it slowed everything else. I did however get used to and comfortable with online backup so I moved to http://www.backupanytime.com for essential work data and a free http://carbonite.com account for my home stuff.

Other than the speed issue I found mozy ok but the speed was an issue.

  7. Our company is in the online backup business. I use copernic (and agree it is excellent) but it does not cause my files to be marked as changed. I use bit level backup which backs up files which hav been modified and I checked this with my coppernic searched files and found only files which were actually changed (By that I mean ammended) were included in the backup. I asked tech support if our software makes any special allowance for coppernic and was advised that the only such allowances common with online backup are the opposite in that they are programmed to backup files which have been marked as already backed up by another system such as tape. Anyone have other coppernic issues with online backup?
