Apple iPhones for 99 cents
Have you purchased a $1,500 iPhone? Well, now you could stand in line just as long and get it for $0.99 – yes that’s ninety-nine cents only.
The catch? You have to be in the first 9 customers at 99¢ Only Stores’ 25th Anniversary Celebration.
I wonder why 9 only … 99 would have been more appropriate for 99 (c) Only. I guess they are… hm.. there’s no better way to say it, so I will just say: cheap. Funny thing is, 99¢ Only Stores may very well be the only business proudly waring the “cheap” badge. After all, they’ve built a business on being cheap. 😉
Update: Standing in a long line is definitely a better deal than what this man went through…

Elton John: Shut Down the Internet
“I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole Internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span.
Ouch… I’ve never thought the day would come when I’d prefer Sir Elton keep his mouth shut.
(full story at The Sun and CNet)
P.S. I’ve never thought I’d ever see Sir Elton on TechMeme, either
Update: (7/6/2010): Apparently Sir Elton forgot to shut this thing off. Three years later it’s now Prince’s turn. Oh, well… we’ll check back on this in 2013…

NASA’s Bad Hair Day: Drinking, Sabotage, Theft
NASA is having a certified Bad Hair Day: Sabotage, Drunk Cosmonauts, Theft – what else should we expect?
Several sources reported that a computer that is supposed to fly aboard shuttle Endeavour in less than two weeks, was sabotaged.
A NASA panel reported that drunk astronauts were allowed to fly despite warnings about their alcohol consumption. I guess no cops can catch them for DUI up there.
Compared to this the loss of $94M in office equipment is just petty theft. Here’s my favorite explanation, this one referring to a missing laptop, valued $4,265:
This computer, although assigned to me, was being used on board the International Space Station. I was informed that it was tossed overboard to be burned up in the atmosphere when it failed.
Your tax money at work.

Enterprise 0.5 in Monterey
Monterey, CA:
Next to Monterey is pretty Carmel, where this sign greets patrons of Carmel Plaza, the main shopping center:
Rules of Common Courtesy
Sticks under 1/4″ diameter are OK, larger ones are forbidden, knives over 2″ forbidden (geez, what about all the restaurants on the premises?), no photography without express permission – wow, everyone there is a tourist, and almost all are taking pix…
I wonder when the TSA will take over running the Plaza…

Your $1,500 iPhone – the Cost of iDay
Were you in line to buy the first batch of iPhones on Friday? If so, you’re probably the proud owner of a $1,500 phone … at least. The base price for the two models is $499 and $599, but you probably could you resist getting some accessories. Did you spend 5 hours in line? 10? A day and a half like Robert Scoble? How much is your time worth?
If we’re looking at $100 an hour (and frankly, almost everyone in the famous Palo Alto line is in a higher bracket) the real cost of an average iPhone purchased on iDay could very well be $1,500 or more.
But hey, you could have done worse… by buying a spot from this poor(?) fellow for $5,000 (photo credit: Engadget). (Oh, wait, it came with a free chair, what a deal…)
The real losers are those who stood on line all day in the hope of making a quick buck on eBay. Corey Spring posted an analysis of 933 eBay auctions, and came to two conclusions:
- Half (52%) of the iPhone auctions expired without a single bid,
- Those that actually concluded with a deal, yielded an average profit of $54.43 (yes, a lousy fifty bucks).
Factoring in the time they spent in line (or the average $15/hour some paid for their “stand-ins”), it’s probably fair to say that eBayers are at a net loss. And they did not have the experience, either
Update: The cutest iPhone users 🙂
