When Bloggers Unite…

Read the phenomenal story of how a stolen Sidekick became the hot topic on the blogosphere. The victim’s friend wanted to publicly embarrass the alleged thieves to the point that they return it. So far about 500 blogs / sites picked up the story, he has received thousands of emails, got digged, slashdotted, linked to from MSNBC… crashed four different servers where he started forums. This is his ISP bill:

And the saga continues ….

Enjoy a Healthy Drink of – Benzene

If despite all the health warnings about drinking sodas (sugared water) you still enjoy them several times a day, chances are you’re drinking benzene.

From the wikipedia definition: “a colorless and flammable liquid with a sweet smell. It is a carcinogen… no longer used as an additive in gasoline…Benzene is a natural constituent of crude oil, but it is usually synthesized from other compounds present in petroleum. “

How does it get in your soda? “Two popular ingredients found in soda and juice drinks can tun toxic when mixed together under certain conditions.
Two of those chemicals, vitamin C and benzoate, are popular additives in many soft drinks and beverages. Under certain conditions, these two chemicals react to form benzene – a human carcinogen. If drinks are exposed to heat and sunlight, it can accelerate the creation of benzene.”

“We found that as FDA was assuring the public that everything was fine, their own data showed that nearly 80 percent of diet soda they had tested during a five year period had levels of benzene…above that of drinking water,”

Fedex Furniture, Gatorade Raft

After the Fedex Furniture ( more pix here and here) here comes the Gatorade raft!

Two MIT Students used empty Gatorade bottles (gee, do they consume anything but Gatorade?), and duct tape to put together a raft, then rowed across the Charles River.

Gatorade is sending them some coupons. C’mon Gatorade, you can do better! How about sending them a full years’ supply, making them spokesman, building a survivor-style commercial …you’ve gotta be more creative!

See more photos of the collection, construction process, then the test ride and the big trip here.

Go to Hell

No, I am not rude. I am talking about visiting the festivities in the town of Hell, Michigan, next Tuesday, which is 6/6/06, or … 666, the “Number of the Beast“.

Yes, the town really exists, although Google refuses to find it, desperately trying to come up with a match in California. Now, I’m not a big fan of German food, but it’s amazing that the places Google associates with Hell are Elbe German European Cuisine, Harry’s Hofbrau, Hardy’s Bavaria, Teskes Germania Restaurant…etc. Although if you regularly dine at the Google Cafeteria, I can understand every ting else is Hell… well, except perhaps the French Laundry. (Back to Google, I wonder how Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren got on the Hell List). Anyway, where Google fails, Yahoo delivers.

Tuesday will be a big day in the life of Hell, the mayor who runs the town and a gift-shop ordered a lot of commemorative items, all in quantities of 666, so run while supplies last! The town’s website (dying from unexpected traffic) has a telling domain name of hell2u.com

If you’re not quite ready to go to Hell … well, there is always Harmony, CA, with a population of 18. (What an explosion, I have an old photo from the early 90’s when it was 8).

Update (666): Dial “Hell”, reach Stowe Boyd.

Update (12/17/08):   Look where the Hell sign showed up 🙂 Do they know?  🙂

Turning Cow Manure into Horsepower

This is not BS .. rather CS     A University group created the world’s first car powered by cow-manure.

Every cow can produce enough manure in a day to make a car go about 15 miles. If you take 20 cows, you get 300 miles of gas in your car.”

The downside: “There are not enough cows in the United States to power every vehicle”  Oh, and there’s no mentioning of the .. hm… frangrance.   (Full article and video at ABC News)

Update (5/31): This is the real “Quick Fix for the Gas Addicts

Update (6/1): Apparently for some, this car “smells”, so they put their bet – and money on electric cars: Tesla Motors, new electric sportscar company, raises $40M from Google guys, others

Creative Way to Fight Spam

Now that the Blue Frog is officially dead, I’ve come up with a creative way to fight at least some of the spam we all receive.  It only works with otherwise legitim products where you can identify not the spammer, but the company whose product or service is being pushed.  Find the email address of a company executive; send a polite email telling them from now on you will forward all their spam until they can stop it; then set up an autofilter to do just that: forward all spam to the individual’s email address, deleting the original from yours.

Please note, I’ve only said it’s a creative way, as a theoretical approach,  I have no clue about legal ramifications, so am not recommending you follow this method.  Perhaps a lawyer-reader can jump in here (?)

Thanks to Panda software for providing the inspiration. (scroll down to updates).

BOSE: Buy Other Sound Equipment

I love it when consumers give new meaning to acronyms, expressing their view of the product, service or company.  I’ve always thought BOSE speakers were overhyped noise-boxes, but that was only my subjective feeling, now here’s a very thorough analysis.  I have to admit I don’t understand half his technical discussion, but just because I am a dummy, he could be right: BOSE means: Buy Other Sound Equipment.

I’m glad my stuff would pass David’s judgement: I only have NHT‘s in the house, which, incidentally is quite an interesting acronym itself: Now Hear This.  I had them direct shipped over a decade ago when I lived in Pennsylvania, and had no clue until today that we’re almost neighbors, since they are located in Benicia, CA.

Anyway, feel free to add other acronyms re-interpreted by customers.
